The difference between a family attended birth and a doula attended birth.

What’s the Difference Between a Doula and Family Member? Can’t My Husband/Mom/Friend be My Doula?

Beautifully Connected Doulas are trained in labor support at a professional level. Our only purpose is support and serve you! You deserve the rock-star treatment, and will get it with our professional doulas.

Professionally Trained, Certified, and Insured

We are trained to understand the physiological and hormonal progression of labor and the symptoms that accompany it. Our knowledge allows us to better support you. We know what’s coming next, and can think quickly on our feet to assist you in the moment.

We are well versed in comfort techniques for all stages of labor, and all birth outcomes. We understand your specific situation, fully support your birth plan, and can make suggestions for comfort and coping techniques based on our knowledge and experience.

We Understand Medical Lingo!

We will be able to explain what the doctors and nurses are talking about. If the nurse comes in and says: “Ok, we’re going to do an A-rom and then put you on a low dose of pit,” we will be the translators!  We will be able to give you objective information in the moment. You will be empowered and educated through all of your decisions!

Think of us as your walking, talking, birth google!

Birth is Extreme

Friends and family may not be prepared for the level of intensity of birth. The sights, smells, sounds, and feelings may overwhelm them and inhibit their ability to provide you objective support. Often times the birthing woman is loud, as her song is her coping mechanism!

The sight of a loved one in pain can sometimes cloud your judgement, or make you freeze. Your doulas are professionally invested in you. They are not attached to you the way family is, and can think with a clear head and provide objective support. Our doulas can support you on neutral ground and will not be shaken if you are uncomfortable or in pain. We understand birth and know that it is all a part of the process.

Most importantly: A Doula and Family Member = A Perfect Team!

We compliment and enhance the experience and support of both your partner and your family. We will give suggestions to your support people on how to help comfort you. Your partner will be able to relax knowing that you both are well supported, and that they don’t need to remember everything in their childbirth education classes!
